defrost cycle
Automatic ice removal
A defrost cycle is the periodic process in refrigeration systems that melts accumulated frost from cooling coils.
Frost buildup reduces efficiency, so the system temporarily reverses or heats the coils to clear ice.
In freezers and heat pumps, this happens automatically at intervals: The defrost cycle kicked in and I heard water dripping.
