decommodified

Stripped of marketability

Decommodified describes something removed from market exchange—no longer bought, sold, or treated as a product.

The term appears most often in discussions of public policy and welfare states, where decommodified services like healthcare or education are provided as rights rather than purchased goods: In Sweden, childcare is largely decommodified.

The word can also describe cultural or personal shifts away from consumerism: She decommodified her holidays by making gifts instead of buying them.
