company scrip

Workplace substitute money

Company scrip is currency issued by a company to pay its workers, redeemable only at company-owned stores.

Common in mining towns and isolated industrial communities through the early twentieth century, the practice trapped workers in cycles of debt by forcing them to spend wages where prices were controlled by their employer.

Sixteen tons and what do you get? Another day older and deeper in debt. I owe my soul to the company store.
