cease to be

End one's existence

To cease to be is to stop existing—a somewhat formal or literary way of saying something no longer is what it was or no longer exists at all.

The company ceased to be profitable after the merger.

When he died, he simply ceased to be.

The phrase often carries philosophical or euphemistic weight, as in Monty Python's famous dead parrot sketch: He's not pining, he's passed on... ceased to be.
