caregiver fatigue

Compassion weariness syndrome

Caregiver fatigue is the physical and emotional exhaustion that comes from providing ongoing care for someone who is ill, disabled, or aging.

The demands of caregiving—managing medications, helping with daily tasks, handling medical appointments—accumulate over time, often leaving caregivers depleted: After months of round-the-clock care for her mother, caregiver fatigue set in.

The condition can lead to depression, health problems, and diminished quality of care.

Also called caregiver burnout.
