cake smash
Messy birthday tradition
A cake smash is a photo shoot, typically for a baby's first birthday, where the child is given a cake to destroy and eat messily.
The resulting images capture the baby covered in frosting, grabbing fistfuls of cake: We hired a photographer for Emma's cake smash.
The term also applies to the event itself.
