brown study
Deep mental absence
A brown study is a state of deep absorption or melancholy reverie—being lost in thought, often gloomily.
The phrase is old-fashioned and literary: I found him in a brown study, staring out the window.
Brown here suggests something dim or gloomy rather than the color itself.
