Unwinnable describes a contest, conflict, or situation that cannot be won regardless of effort or strategy.
The term often applies to wars, arguments, or games where the conditions make victory impossible: an unwinnable war, an unwinnable argument with my mother.
In gaming, an unwinnable state is one where progress becomes impossible, forcing a restart.
