steep time

Infusion waiting period

Steep time is how long tea, coffee, or other substances should soak in liquid to extract flavor.

Too short yields weak results; too long produces bitterness.

The term appears on tea packaging and in brewing instructions: The recommended steep time for green tea is two to three minutes.

Also called steeping time.
