practice balls

Not game equipment

Practice balls are balls designed for training rather than competitive play.

In golf, they're often limited-flight or foam balls for backyard use; in baseball, they may be softer or differently weighted.

The term sometimes appears as a euphemism or joke playing on the word "balls": These are just my practice balls—I save the good ones for game day.
