out of the way

Not blocking anything

Out of the way describes something remote, inconvenient to reach, or not on a direct route: We stopped at an out-of-the-way diner.

It also means completed or no longer an obstacle: Let's get the paperwork out of the way first.

To put someone out of the way is to remove them as a problem—sometimes by killing them.
