divide up

Share out equally

Divide up is a phrasal verb meaning to separate something into portions and distribute them among people or categories.

It's slightly more emphatic than divide alone, stressing the completeness of the separation or the act of allocation: We divided up the pizza equally or The team divided up responsibilities for the project.

The "up" particle adds a sense of thoroughness—everything gets parceled out, nothing remains whole or unclaimed.
