awkward comedy
Squirm-inducing laughs
Awkward comedy is humor derived from social discomfort—characters trapped in embarrassing situations, saying the wrong thing, or enduring painful silences.
The audience cringes along with (or at) the characters.
Shows like *The Office* and *Curb Your Enthusiasm* built their style around this tension: I had to pause the episode because the secondhand embarrassment was too much.
