North-South divide
Geographic wealth gap
The North-South divide refers to the economic and developmental gap between wealthy industrialized nations (predominantly in the Northern Hemisphere) and poorer developing countries (largely in the Southern Hemisphere).
Within individual countries, the term describes regional economic disparities: The North-South divide in England reflects decades of deindustrialization in northern cities.
The phrase emerged from Cold War–era geopolitics but remains current in discussions of global inequality.
