modern ethics
Current moral philosophy
Modern ethics is the branch of philosophy concerned with questions of right and wrong as they've developed since the Enlightenment—emphasizing reason, individual rights, and systematic moral frameworks rather than divine command or inherited tradition.
The field encompasses utilitarian calculation of outcomes, Kantian duty-based reasoning, and virtue ethics revived for contemporary life.
Modern ethics also addresses problems unknown to ancient thinkers: the modern ethics of genetic engineering, corporate responsibility, artificial intelligence.
The term sometimes contrasts with postmodern or applied ethics, though boundaries blur.
