hard freezes
Killing cold snaps
Hard freezes are periods when temperatures drop well below freezing—typically to 28°F (-2°C) or lower—for several hours.
The term appears most often in weather forecasts and agricultural contexts, where hard freezes threaten crops and pipes: A hard freeze warning is in effect tonight.
Distinguished from light or soft freezes, which are briefer and less damaging.
