double-dog dared

Seriously called out

Double-dog dared is the past tense of double-dog dare, a childhood escalation of a regular dare.

In the informal hierarchy of playground challenges, a double-dog dare carries more weight than an ordinary dare, making it harder to refuse without losing face: He double-dog dared me to jump off the roof.

The phrase remains nostalgic shorthand for being seriously challenged to do something risky or foolish.
