The Institute for Dynamic Educational Advancement (IDEA) is a nonprofit organization that works to enhance scientific, artistic, and cultural literacy by improving how people find and interact with online information. Incorporated as a 501(c)(3) organization in 2002, IDEA and its supporters are dedicated to identifying, developing, and advocating on behalf of innovative approaches and technologies that assist people in exchanging meaningful information that leads to greater understanding of the world in which we all live.

Helping Technology Fulfill its Promise

Although IDEA recognizes the extraordinary benefits of technology, we feel that it often does not fulfill its promise. This is evidenced by myriad unintended negative consequences that have arisen from the propagation of technology and the growth of the Internet.

For example, as people consume vast amounts of information through ever-newer communication technologies, some of the most important issues facing our society are getting short shrift. IDEA believes a well-informed society should not rely solely on alarmist news media, a fragmenting publishing industry, aggregating bloggers, and a commercialized educational sector. IDEA helps to address information overload through pinpointing and developing technologies that promote deceleration and contemplation and provide learning spaces for in-depth exploration.

Against the backdrop of flitting and fleeting breaking news and commentary, culture chasms are widening. Technology and the Internet have rapidly advanced globalization and democratized information. However, as disenfranchised cultures have adapted to the social norms of more powerful cultures, many traditions and mores have been subverted. IDEA believes that technology and the Internet can be utilized to increase cross-cultural understanding and encourage small acts of cultural appropriateness that prevent alienation and positively impact the retention of traditions and mores.

Forward-Thinking. Results-Driven.

IDEA strives to enhance the very ways people think, learn, and use technology, both within and outside of the realm of formal education. Pulling back the veil on the illusion of infinite choice, IDEA’s projects and programs spur learners of all ages to follow their curiosity and apply critical thinking skills to virtually any topic. For those in the teaching profession who are increasingly charged with doing more for less, IDEA provides practical and engaging tools and lessons that combine technology with hands-on activities.

IDEA’s ongoing research and development push the envelope of human-computer interaction in order to support web-based learning. With the proper tools to access and manipulate information, people can make better, faster, more informed decisions. Many of the organization’s projects have grown out of IDEA’s research into creating online interaction that mimics real-world experiences.
